Sarasota just got the biggest travel endorsement in the country. On July 1, 2026, CNN released its second annual “America's Best Towns to Visit” list, and out of hundreds of destinations considered nationwide, Sarasota, Florida took the No. 1 spot. For those of us who live and work here, the ranking confirms what we tell buyers every week: there is simply no other place that combines world-class culture, award-winning beaches, and small-city livability the way Sarasota does.
CNN’s editors evaluated towns on attractions, food and drink, arts and culture, local identity, accessibility, and overall visitor experience. Sarasota earned its highest marks for arts and culture, beaches and gardens, and its intriguing history. In CNN’s words, this Gulf Coast city “goes all-in on artistic excellence,” anchored by a cultural compound built from the fortunes of circus magnate John Ringling.
The feature highlights the institutions locals know and love: The Ringling, the Sarasota Art Museum, Sarasota Opera, Sarasota Orchestra, The Sarasota Ballet, Asolo Repertory Theatre, Urbanite Theatre, Sarasota Contemporary Dance, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and the new Mote Science Education Aquarium. It also celebrates the quirks that give Sarasota its one-of-a-kind identity: our circus heritage, the Amish and Mennonite community of Pinecraft, and St. Armands Circle, whose wagon-wheel layout was designed by John Ringling himself.
And of course, the beaches. From the quartz-white sand of Siesta Beach to the quieter shores of Longboat Key, CNN calls Sarasota “a sophisticated cultural getaway that delivers sun and surf, too.” Sarasota Magazine’s coverage of the win rounds up even more of the local spots CNN name-checked, including the St. Regis Longboat Key Resort, Indigenous in Towles Court, the Bahi Hut and Dry Dock Waterfront Grill.
The full 2026 top ten: Sarasota, FL; Roanoke, VA; Lawrence, KS; Iowa City, IA; Juneau, AK; Burlington, VT; Fort Collins, CO; Bethlehem, PA; Greenville, SC; and New Haven, CT. Being ranked above destinations like Greenville and Burlington perennial darlings of national “best of” lists says a lot about the moment Sarasota is having.
National recognition like this doesn’t just fill hotel rooms. Time and again, we’ve seen high-profile rankings translate into real estate demand: visitors come for a vacation, fall in love with the lifestyle, and come back as second-home buyers, retirees and relocating families. Here’s what we expect this spotlight to reinforce:
• Stronger buyer interest in the barrier islands. Beach coverage drives demand for Siesta Key, Lido Key, Longboat Key and Anna Maria Island. Our new guide to Sarasota’s beaches and barrier island living breaks down what it’s like to own on each key.
• More relocation inquiries. Arts-and-culture rankings resonate with buyers choosing between Sun Belt metros. If that’s you, start with our Moving to Sarasota relocation guide and our Florida Tax Advantage Savings Calculator to see what a move could save you.
• Continued strength in downtown and cultural-district living. Walkable access to the theaters, galleries and bayfront is a major draw see our guide to living on Sarasota’s Cultural Coast.
• A tailwind for sellers. If you own here, this kind of press supports long-term values. Check the current Sarasota & Manatee market report or request a free home valuation to see where your property stands today.
